Variable Voltage Settings: To adjust the voltage, click the firing button three times quickly while the device is on. The LED will change colors to indicate the selected voltage – white for 2.8V, green for 3.2V, and red for 3.6V. Choose the setting based on your preference for vapor production, heat, and flavor intensity. I like to vape hot, so I prefer 3.6 volts.
Loading the Device: Place your wax concentrate onto the C4-DE coil using the pick tool.
Vaping: Press and hold the firing button while inhaling from the mouthpiece. Release the button to stop firing the device.
Magnetic Connections: The mouthpiece attaches magnetically, making it easy to remove for loading concentrate and cleaning the tip.
Remember to turn off the device when not in use to save battery life and for safety reasons, but the device is actually pretty good about preserving battery charge while it’s not being used. I accidentally left the Zen on for two weeks while not in use, and it still had plenty of charge for a full vaping session.
Performance
The Yocan Zen performs great, especially considering its size and price point.
The vapor produced has been smooth and flavorful. The three voltage settings allow you to tailor the vapor density and flavor intensity to your liking, with higher settings producing denser vapor. The C4-DE coil also heats up quickly and efficiently, which means you can hit this at any time and not have to worry about waiting for it to heat up.
The chamber is small, so this is more fitting for personal use. While the size limits the amount of concentrate that can be loaded, the small size also allows it to work efficiently and reduce the waste of your concentrate.
The Zen is also discreet. The compact size makes it easy to carry around, the device’s style is unassuming (it looks like any other vape pen), and you can set it to low voltage to get minimal vapor production if you want; all things that make it a great option for on-the-go use.
There are two airflow intake holes on the sides of the pen. You get a loose mouth-to-lung or restricted lung draw hit.
Coils
The Yocan Zen comes with a new and innovative C4-DE Coil. This coil is a combination of ceramic and diatomaceous earth, which is something I’ve never heard of before.
According to Wikipedia, diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, soft, sedimentary rock that usually contains 80-90% silica. It’s made of fossilized remains of microalgae.
Yocan says their new coil is food-grade, but I’m more familiar with diatomaceous earth being used for filtration materials and pest control. I’ve also read that it can be dangerous if inhaled because of its silica content, although Wikipedia also says that newer formulations of diatomaceous earth are safer than in the past because it contains little or no silica at all. This does give me a bit of pause, though.
What’s also interesting is that this is a totally new coil material, and Yocan doesn’t say anything at all about it on their website. I want to understand more about its formulation, and what real tests show about how it performs against normal ceramic coils.
The only thing Yocan really says about these coils is that they provide rapid, efficient heating and that the coils deliver pure flavor. And I would agree with those claims. They say it takes three seconds to heat up, and that’s true. It heats up extremely fast. The flavor is great too. Ceramic is known for flavor production, so that might not have anything to do with diatomaceous earth. Either way, the flavor is clean.
The biggest drawback to the coil is that it’s small. It doesn’t hold a lot of concentrate, so you’ll be reloading it often if you like longer sessions.
Battery & Charging
The Yocan Zen has an internal 650mAh battery, which gives it a good balance between size and battery life.
The 650mAh battery provides enough power for several sessions, depending on how much you use the device and what temperature you set it at. It’s suitable for casual daily use. If you use it at its lowest voltage, you can get up to 8 hours, which is very good.
The small battery size allows the device to have a very small footprint and makes it very portable. The size makes the Zen easy to carry around.
With the USB Type-C charging port, the device charges relatively quickly. A full charge typically takes around an hour, which I feel is convenient to do between sessions.
The LED indicator light gives you an indication of battery life, so you can always catch it when the battery is low, and you can throw it on the charger.

Final Thoughts
The Yocan Zen is a great choice for those seeking a portable, easy-to-use device for wax concentrates.
