Freemax Maxpod Review (V1)

The Freemax Maxpod was sent to me for review from Freemax. This is a new pod device that uses Freemax’s awesome mesh coils to deliver better flavor and performance than other pod devices on the market. Or that’s the claim anyway.

Specs:

  • 8-12 watts
  • Size: 100.81mm x 21.81mm x 14mm

In the Box:

  • Freemax Maxpod
  • Two coils (1.5-ohm and 1.0-ohm)
  • Lanyard
  • Micro USB Cable

Design

The body is made of steel and zinc alloy, so it has a really nice sturdy feel and shiny look to it. It has some heft to it too, which really makes it durable and higher quality.

It’s very simple on the outside. There is no button, so this is draw-activated. On the front of the device is an LED light and on the side is the micro-USB charging port. Each side of the device also has a tiny airflow intake hole.

Freemax also included a lanyard and lanyard ring.

The rubber ring stretches out over the device so that it’s really tight. Then all you need to do is run the loop at the end of the lanyard through the little hole on the side. If you use this, just make sure you don’t block the airflow holes on either side of the device.

The size of the Maxpod is about 4 inches tall, less than an inch wide, and about a 1/2 inch thick.

The front of the device has a diamond or 3d cube design printed on it and the Maxpod comes in six different colors; Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, White, and Black

Features

The Freemax Maxpod is draw-activated, so all you need to do to turn it on is push the pod in and take a hit.

The device has a constant output of 3.3 volts and pushes a specific current depending on the coil you’re using. For the 1.0 ohm coil, you get 3.3 amps or 11 watts. For the 1.5 ohm coil, you get 2.2 amps, or 8 watts.

The Pod

The pod has a capacity of 2ml, which is the typical size for a pod device.

The mouthpiece is slim on the end and comfortable to use.

To fill the pod, you pull open the plug on the side of the pod. It’s easy to fill.

And my favorite thing about the pod is that it uses replaceable coils, rather than having purchase full pods every time. That saves a lot of money in the long run. The coils is press-fit, so just plug it in and you’re ready to go.

The pod sits in the device with two magnets. It holds strong.

NS Mesh Coils

The new NS Mesh coils are the star of the show in this kit.

According to Freemax, this little kit has been in development for three years while the Freemax team worked to transplant the same mesh coil technology they use in their popular Freemax and Fireluke tanks into the Maxpod. The Fireluke tanks are some of the best flavor tanks out there due to the amazing coils, so that’s definitely something worth noting.

These coils are designed for both Nic salts and freebase liquids. Technically any coil can use both types of nicotines, but what Freemax did was thoroughly test both types of nicotines and all types of VG/PG ratios to make sure the coils delivered the same flavor and performance no matter which type of liquid you use. I think that’s a really cool idea.

NS Mesh 1.0-ohm coil

The 1.0-ohm coil works best with 20-30mg nic salt liquids and 3-12mg freebase nicotine liquids. Anything in those ranges should have the same flavor and vapor.

NS Mesh 1.5-ohm coil

The 1.5-ohm coil works best with 30-50mg nicotine salt liquids, and 12-24mg freebase nicotine liquids.

If you’re using nicotine salts, Freemax recommends that you use a VG/PG ratio of 50/50, 40/60, or 60/40 liquids. So for salt nicotine, it’s best to use lower VG, but it’s still good up 60% VG.

If you’re using regular nicotine, they recommend that you use 70/30, 80/20, or 60/40 liquids. So regular nicotine performs better at higher VG ratios.

This type of fine-tuning is awesome. I love that they’ve tested these coils this much to be able to provide such specific recommendations.

The life span of the coils are pretty good too. Freemax says that they should last about 5-8 refills.

And the flavor that I get out of these is exactly like I would have expected from Freemax. The flavor is really, really good. I was blown-away on my first hit. I’ve been vaping this salt nic for months in many different devices and I never got so much flavor out of it. It was like a whole new flavor. I’m loving these coils.

Airflow

The airflow comes in from the sides of the device through these little tiny holes. You have to watch where your fingers are when vaping or you’ll plug them and create a tighter draw.

The airflow is a restricted vape, so it’s good, but it’s just slightly looser than I would like, but it still hits pretty well. And one thing I’ve been doing is purposely blocking one of the airflow intake holes to tighten the draw a little bit. You could even use the included lanyard ring to block one or both of those holes if you wanted to.

Battery

The battery inside the Maxpod is an internal 550mAh battery.

One thing to note about charging is that Freemax includes a little warning card in the box with a few bullet points and one of them warns not to vape this while it’s charging. So just keep that in mind.

The LED light on the front indicates battery life. White means you have a full charge, blue means that you have a medium change, and red means that it’s less than 30% and you need to charge it.

Final Thoughts

The Maxpod is a really nice pod system. It works well and looks great. The only drawback for me is more of a personal preference and that’s the airflow. I would have liked it to be a little tighter. But that’s an easy fix by blocking one of the tiny intake holes. And the biggest pro of the Maxpod is the flavor that comes through the coils. They did a great job of developing them.

Freemax sent this to me for review and you can pick it up from them for around $30. Check out their site for more details.
